The Surface Transport sector generates 11% of the European Union's GDP while employing 16 million people. The central objective of transport research under FP7 is to develop safer, greener and smarter transport systems for Europe that will benefit citizens, respect the environment and increase the competitiveness of European industries in the global market.

The project Virtual Press Office to Improve EU Sustainable Surface Transport Research Media Visibility on a National and Regional Level is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7).

The VPO consists of a dissemination platform. It collects, structures, analyses and communicates the results of national and regional transport research projects across Europe in key identified topics. Its objective is twofold, it primarily aims at improving the visibility of national and regional level research results covering all major surface transport modes - road, rail and water-borne. Secondly, it intends to become a reference for the sector with the inclusion of a searchable database: www.press4transport.eu .

Unedited research results will be uploaded to the online tool Virtual Press Release Platform. Once posted, these short texts will then be edited by our team of journalists to produce a professional press release. After scientific/technical approval, the final version of the press release will be sent to the relevant media.

Information to be included ranges from project results to upcoming events and workshops or project meetings. P4T journalists might assist in identifying newsworthy stories concerning the projects.

The main objective of P4T is to fill the gap between the communication capabilities of the projects by providing an efficient and visible dissemination procedure for their results via various media sources - newspapers, general magazines, specialised magazines, websites and portals, blogs, etc.

  • The media gains a new source of information in a format that is not too technical.
  • Sustainable Surface Transport (SST)-related projects' consortia gain a new tool to disseminate their work which will increase their visibility and thus their chances of success. Increased awareness will likely alert them to third parties that may be interested in using their results/services.
  • SST-sector stakeholders such as associations, companies, universities, etc. are given a new source of information on the latest news, developments and results of the various projects current and past, helping them acquire better insight on trends in the transport sector.
  • It can also lead third parties to discover projects that are of their particular interest.
